The enraged people of the town were running after the poet and the parson's daughter believing he was kidnapping her. When they reach them near the burnt old chapel, where ages ago their ancestors burnt the scarecrow and the damsel alive, the Christmas Bells chime, they throw down their weapons seeing their foolery. The spell of the scarecrow's revenge breaks, and the dark shadow leaves the town.
